Carly Rivers McKenzie Friend Service
Carly Rivers is an independent McKenzie Friend focused on helping people who are representing themselves in family court.

My experience in the Family Court goes back to 2014, starting with my own complex child arrangements case and later divorce proceedings, both with solicitors and as a self-representing parent. In 2022, I successfully appealed as a litigant in person and had a judge’s decision overturned, which deepened my belief that, with preparation and support, parents can present their cases clearly.
Through my work in children’s rights design and postgraduate study in Advanced Child Protection, I’ve learned to look at situations from the child’s perspective as well as the adults’ and professionals’ around them. I now use this experience to offer practical, child-focused support that helps families navigate court, with fees that aim to keep support more affordable than relying on a solicitor for every stage, so family resources can be used with children’s needs in mind.
How I work
I work with parents and family members who want steady, practical support rather than complicated legal language.
-
I listen to what’s happening in your case and what you’re most worried about.
-
We break the process into small, manageable steps.
-
I help you prepare paperwork and organise information so you can present your case clearly.
-
At hearings I sit beside you, take notes and quietly remind you of the points you want to cover.
Values
The way I work is based on:
-
Clear language – explaining things in everyday language.
-
Respect – your decisions and your case are yours.
-
Calm – helping you stay as steady as possible in a stressful situation.
-
Boundaries – being honest about what I can and can’t do.
Clarifying my role
I’m not a solicitor or barrister and I don’t act as your representative.
I’m there to support you as a litigant in person so you can speak for yourself with more confidence and organisation.
